Lorem ipsum is placeholder text used by designers and developers to fill layouts before real content is ready. Because it is not meaningful, it keeps attention on the design.
Choose how much text you need and the unit, then copy it into your mockup.
The standard passage traces back to Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. A printer in the 1500s, and later typesetters, scrambled words from it to build a type specimen, and it spread through the printing trade and then through desktop publishing software. The words look like Latin, yet they are cut and altered so that the text has no readable meaning, which keeps reviewers focused on layout rather than on what a sentence says.
Placeholder text is useful but has limits. Real content has uneven length, long unbroken words, numbers and different languages, and a layout that works for neat Latin paragraphs may break on actual copy. Test with extremes such as a very long headline or a one-word paragraph. Designers also warn that dummy text can hide problems with readability, so replace it with real or realistic content before a design is signed off or published.
It is based on a passage from a work by Cicero, scrambled so it reads as nonsense.

No. Text is generated in your browser.
Dummy text gives search engines nothing useful to index, and a page full of it looks like low-quality content. Use it only in prototypes and replace it with real copy before publishing.
Yes. The passage comes from a work in the public domain, and generated placeholder text carries no usage restrictions, though you should still replace it with real content before release.
