Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines in your text, with estimated reading and speaking time. Updates as you type.
See how long your text is at a glance. The counter reports words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines, plus an estimate of reading and speaking time.
It updates as you type, and your text stays in your browser.
A word count looks simple, but each tool defines it differently. This counter treats any run of characters between whitespace as one word, so a hyphenated term like well-known counts as one and a standalone dash surrounded by spaces counts as one too. Other programs, such as word processors, may split differently, so counts can disagree by a small amount. Languages written without spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, do not suit whitespace counting, and character counts are more meaningful for them.
Character limits are often stricter than word counts. Search engines display roughly 150 to 160 characters of a meta description and about 50 to 60 characters of a title before truncating, though the real cut-off depends on pixel width, not characters. Social platforms have their own limits and may count links or emoji in special ways. Reading time estimates use a fixed average speed, so technical or dense text will realistically take longer than the figure shown.
Any run of characters separated by whitespace counts as a word.
Using an average of 200 words per minute. Real speed varies with the reader and the text.
Yes. Characters are counted by Unicode code point, so an emoji is one character.
It stays in your browser. It is remembered locally so you do not lose it on refresh, and never sent to a server.
Programs apply different rules for hyphens, numbers, symbols and line breaks. A small difference is normal, so use the figure from the tool the final reader or platform uses.
About 250 to 500 words per page depending on font size and spacing. A single-spaced page in a standard font usually holds near 500, and double-spaced about 250.
